Privacy Policy

Sasuga Jisho · Last updated 4 October 2026

In short Sasuga Jisho has no user accounts and no server of ours. Your searches, bookmarks, word lists and study history stay on your device and are never sent to us.

Information leaves your device in only five situations: a one-time handwriting-model download from Google, speech read aloud by your phone's own voice engine, a purchase handled by Apple or Google, advertising shown in the free version, and an email you choose to send us.

Sasuga Jisho (“the app”) is a Japanese–Myanmar dictionary published by an independent developer (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what the app does and does not do with information. It applies to the iOS and Android versions of the app.

1. Information stored on your device

The app saves the following on your device, in the app's own private storage. None of it is transmitted to us or to anyone else:

The dictionary itself is a database file included inside the app. Looking a word up requires no network connection and no request to any server.

2. Information we do not collect

We do not operate a server, a user database or an analytics system. The app contains no analytics SDK and no crash-reporting SDK. We do not collect your name, email address, contacts, photos, precise location, or the words you look up. We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not build advertising profiles ourselves.

3. Handwriting recognition

The handwriting scratch pad uses Google ML Kit Digital Ink Recognition. Recognition runs entirely on your device: the strokes you draw are not sent to Google or to us.

The first time you use the scratch pad, the app downloads the Japanese recognition model from Google's servers. That download is an ordinary network request to Google and, like any network request, reaches Google with your IP address and basic device and app information. After the model is downloaded, the feature works offline. Google's handling of that request is governed by the Google Privacy Policy.

4. Reading words aloud

When you tap the speaker icon, the app passes the word to the text-to-speech engine built into your operating system (Apple's on iOS, Google's or your device maker's on Android). Depending on the engine and the voice you have selected in your system settings, some engines process that text on their own servers. The app does not choose or control this; it is governed by your device maker's privacy policy. No speech audio is recorded, stored or sent to us.

5. Purchases and Premium

Premium is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. The purchase is handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play. We never see and never store your name, payment card, billing address or store account details.

When you buy or restore Premium, the app asks the store whether your store account owns the product and then saves a yes/no flag on your device. “Restore Purchases” repeats that question — for example after reinstalling the app or moving to a new device. Apple's and Google's handling of the transaction is governed by their own privacy policies.

6. Advertising

The free version of the app shows banner advertising supplied by Google AdMob. The Premium version shows no advertising at all, and the advertising SDK is not used once Premium is active.

To serve, limit and measure ads, Google may collect and use device identifiers, approximate location derived from your IP address, and data about how you interact with an ad. Google's use of this data is described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

On iOS, personalised advertising requires your permission through Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt, and you can change your answer at any time in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the app shows a Google-certified consent form before any personalised advertising, and you can reopen it from the app's Settings screen to change or withdraw your choices. Declining personalised ads does not remove ads; it makes them non-personalised.

7. Contacting us from inside the app

“Report to Developer” opens your own email app with a message addressed to support@sasugajisho.com. To make a report useful, the app pre-fills the app version and build number, your operating system name and version, and the app's current language. You can edit or delete any of that before sending, and nothing is sent unless you send it yourself.

Mail to that address is forwarded to the developer's mailbox. We use what you send only to understand and answer your report, and we keep it no longer than we need for that. Write to the same address if you want your correspondence deleted.

8. Children

The app is a general-audience study tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and the app is not tagged as child-directed for advertising purposes.

9. Your choices

10. Legal bases and international users

Where the UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, our legal bases are: your consent for personalised advertising; the performance of a contract for processing a purchase; and our legitimate interest in answering support email and in showing non-personalised advertising to fund a free app. You may ask us for access to, correction of, or deletion of any correspondence you have sent us, and you may complain to your local supervisory authority.

In Japan, we handle personal information in accordance with the Act on the Protection of Personal Information. Because the app stores its data on your own device, most requests of this kind concern only email you have sent us.

11. Security

App data is stored in the app's private storage area, which your operating system isolates from other apps. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but because the app holds no account and transmits no study data, there is no central store of user information to be breached.

12. Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new “last updated” date. Significant changes will also be described in the app's release notes.
